Consumers can only use simple methods to identify garments when buying them, affected by time and conditions, in steps that can be divided into." One measure and three looks", i.e. measure the size specification, look at the quality of the appearance, look at the inner workmanship and look at the raw materials.

Measurement specifications

For tops, measure the length of the garment, chest circumference and, for some garments, collar size, sleeve length and total shoulder width. Trousers are mainly measured for trouser length, waist circumference and leg. Compare the measurements with the garment specifications to see if they are correct, allowing a tolerance of +- 1.5% for each part.

Look for quality in appearance

         (1) Three-step method for tops

The appearance and quality of the blouse is identified in three steps, visually inspecting the front, back and sides.

Front: see whether the collar and barge are flat and square; see whether the chest of the front is full and round, see whether the position of the bag is correct and whether the bag and cover are flat.

Back: see if the back of the body is flat and the shoulder blades are wide and comfortable; see if the back fork is flat; see if the collar is round and flat.

Sides: see if the shoulder seams are straight; the sleeves should be round and smooth and eat evenly; see if the sole sleeves are consistent front to back; see if the hem seams are straight.

        (2) Trousers three-step method

The quality of the trousers' appearance can also be identified in three steps: flat, upper and three-dimensional. The method is also visual inspection and measuring.

The plane: first look at the outer plane (i.e. align the seams and line them up), see if the side seams are straight; see if the side seam pockets are well-fitted and the pockets are not exposed; see if the trouser legs are well-fitted and of the same size, without hanging pockets; then look at the inner plane (i.e. pull up one trouser leg) and check if the lower crotch seam is aligned and straight; see if the trouser seams are aligned and straight.

Then look at the lining (i.e. pull up one leg) and check that the lower crotch seam is aligned and straight; see if the lower crotch seam is hanging up.

Upper part: see if the waist is straight; see if the tucks and seams are symmetrical; see if the back pockets are fitted and tidy; see if the small tabs on the string pockets are flat and accurately positioned; see if the placket and lining are suitable and round.

Stand: pick up the trousers in the shape they are worn and see if the front and back seams are rounded and smooth, the four straight seams, the trouser pieces and the seams are flat and not hanging open.

        (3) Look at the inner workmanship

Mainly check the stitching, workmanship, pinch surface and stitching.

        (4) Look at the raw materials

Mainly check the colour difference, surface blemishes, backward hair, pattern and pattern pairs, surface stains, discolouration, yellow soup, warp and weft slope and bottom edge warp, as well as insect infestation. The "one measure, three looks" simple identification method can basically confirm the quality of a garment. Once you have become proficient, you can combine the "three looks" together, which is a good and simple method.
